This poor, gentle girl was abandoned as though her life meant nothing. She spent her days curled behind a cold cell within a shelter, loud with the piercing cries of other wary lives. She was likely so confused, dropped off, and left behind by the people who were supposed to keep her safe. Severe skin cancer had claimed her nose and had likely spread within her skull, threatening her life. She needed immediate help, help that she should have been provided long ago.

Aurora Borealis (nicknamed Rory) was thrown into a shelter when she needed help the most. She was suffering from squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer that had rapidly taken hold of her. The cancer had attacked her nose, making it difficult for people to look at her sweet face. While she has no trouble breathing, she is visibly in discomfort, with frequent sneezing attacks and an occasional whistling sound.

Even so, Rory has remained a spirited, affectionate companion. She needed immediate intervention; the shelter was no place for her! Fortunately, one of our rescue volunteers had been traveling home for the holidays and took a quick stop at the shelter. There, she fell in love with Rory and knew she had to take her home. Together, they made the long trek back to our rescue in Virginia. The stars truly aligned for this sweet kitty, as we typically only help local animals!

Upon arriving at our facility, Rory was immediately taken under the care of attentive veterinarians. She was quickly placed on pain medications and antibiotics to manage her symptoms as plans for her future took shape. They conducted a biopsy of her nose, an aspirate of her lymph nodes, and X-rays to understand the extent of her condition. The next step was a critical CT scan, which has been scheduled and will hopefully unravel the extent to which the cancer had spread within her skull, chest, and abdomen.

This is crucial to determine whether we need an additional, subsequent course of radiation and decide the next best steps. We are doing everything possible to ensure this girl receives the best care possible during this trying time. She is truly so sweet, continuously seeking our comfort and warmth, melting into us. She wants to stay at our side, constantly, relishing in the constant affection. Rory deserves a beautiful, loving home where she can receive the care she deserves. We hope you can see past her deformities and see her for the bubbly, gentle cat she truly is.

Aurora Borealis’ journey to recovery will be far easier and will come at a steep cost for our 100% volunteer-run nonprofit. Please help us secure the treatments she so desperately needs by contributing to her medical fund. Your support can provide Rory with the time and comfort she deserves. Thank you, endlessly.
