Hi! Welcome to Show2Win, formerly known as BlueRose Kennels. The goal is to provide useful tips, tricks, tutorials and product reviews for the Dog Show Community as well as all dog lovers who want to learn something new. Today’s video will review some basic ear trim techniques on a Golden Retriever. (These same techniques can be used on other breeds with similar ears.)

We have added some scissors and thinning shears as well as the stripping knife used in this videos to our amazon store listed below. We highly recommend JL SharpShop also listed below. If you call him or see him at a show, he can refer you to our favorites. Be sure to tell him “AMYSENTME” to receive 10% OFF your order or FREE shipping!

Enjoy!

  1. So would this ear be what you would do in a show? Or just maintenance between shows? I am a pet groomer, but enjoy trying to show groom my golden clients. I definitely take off more than this, but partly that is because of the infrequent grooming most of my golden clients do. Most only coming 3-4 times per year or less. I actually shave out the inside of the ears with a 10 since a couple suffer from frequent ear infections. And the ones who come with big mats behind the ears get a lot of hair thinned out to avoid that!

  2. Thank you for this excellent video!! I know why you have that constant beautiful smile!! You’re always around Goldens the best dogs on earth!! :)))

  3. Would similar trimming be used with Clumber spaniel ears? I am involved in both breeds and still learning. Thanks for the great video!!

  4. Amy – can you do a video on thinning/blending from the ears down into the neck/ruff? You showed me how in person years ago, but I still struggle over taking too little or too much out, especially in front from throat down to point of shoulders.

  5. Awesome job! So many people take WAY too much hair off and it makes the dog's head look ridiculous because they're left with these little scarecrow ears and a massive head. This trim is just right!

  6. Thank you for this informative video! Was that a coarse stripping knife you used? I bought a fine one, but wondering if I should get a medium or coarse for my Golden’s ears. The fine one takes off very little hair.

  7. I’d love to see the technique you use for holding the dog’s head still while trimming its right ear. If you’re right handed, using your right hand to hold the dog’s head still isn’t going to work. Thanks!

  8. Excellent video! Am going to get my own table, shears, etc. and wondered if, outside of the links provided, put the actual type/teeth/model, etc. for the shears. I'd like to start grooming my Goldens 🙂 (yes, 2 – Avé & Grace)
