Before You Get A Siamese Cat You Need To Know This #cat #shorts

Did you know Siamese cats are born completely white — and their color develops after birth based entirely on temperature?

It all comes down to a special gene that controls melanin production in their fur. But unlike every other cat breed, this gene does not work at normal body temperature. It only activates in the cold. When the temperature rises above 98 degrees Fahrenheit the enzyme shuts off completely and no dark pigment gets produced. When the temperature drops — the enzyme switches back on and the fur gradually darkens.

This is why Siamese cats develop their signature dark face, ears, paws, and tail. Those are the coolest parts of their body. The enzyme activates there first and stays active the longest — literally painting the cat based on where it runs coldest.

And if you shave a small patch of their fur? The exposed skin is cooler than the surrounding area — so the fur that grows back comes in noticeably darker than before.

Newborn Siamese kittens are completely white because inside the mother’s womb the temperature is warm and stable. The enzyme never activates. No pigment gets produced at all before birth. Every single Siamese cat develops their markings after they enter the world.

Same cat. Different temperature. Completely different appearance.
