POV: Happiness Is Right Behind You | Life Lessons from My Devon Rex Cat
One of the most beautiful lessons I’ve learned from my cat, Balthassar, is this: being alone doesn’t have to make you feel lonely. In fact, it can be a time to truly enjoy your own company. Sure, Balthassar isn’t the only cat in the house, but he doesn’t always need others to play with him. Even if no one else is interested, he still finds ways to be playful and happy all by himself.
It’s a reminder that we don’t always need someone else to validate us or make us feel complete. Whether you’re surrounded by others or spending time alone, happiness comes from within—and you should never feel like you need permission to laugh, play, or enjoy your own body.
Cats have an incredible way of showing us how to embrace every moment. If others don’t want to join in the fun, that’s okay. Balthassar reminds me daily that there’s always a reason to find joy, even in the smallest, silliest things.
This is just one of the many lessons I’ve captured in my book, The Therapy of Meow: How to Live, Love, and Nap Like a Cat. It’s filled with wisdom inspired by my feline friends, offering insights on how to find peace, playfulness, and fulfillment—whether you’re surrounded by people or simply enjoying yourself on your own.
So, when life feels quiet, remember: you are enough. And sometimes, all it takes to brighten your day is to look behind you—or under your tail—and rediscover the joy that’s been with you all along.
