Falconry: Hunting for Snowshoe Hares

In this falconry video I take Sundance the Harris hawk to the mountains of Northern Utah to hunt for Snowshoe hares. Snowshoe Hares are smaller than Jack rabbits (sage hares) but have enormous feet to prevent them from sinking into the snow. Snowshoe hares have brown fur in the summer, but change out to longer white fur in the winter to help them better blend in with the snow.

In this video I reference Steve Chindgren’s channel. Please check out his work here:

  1. we were out after hare yesterday, and as soon as I'm done my coffee I'll head out again. But do we all talk to our harris's like they are toddlers?

  2. Usual format is great but it’s been nice seeing you out and seeing your native countryside there , looks beautiful .
“ where’s all the rabbits “ welcome to my world hehe

  3. I may be wrong, and I am not trying to say that you don't know what you are looking at, but judging by the size and shape of those tracks I would have thought those were mule deer tracks.

  4. We have a lot of snowshoe hare here in Québec. It is true, as a hare, that they do not have a burrow. Usualy, you will find them under fir tree on rainy days, protected from weather and predators. They run fast and stay still as needed and are hard to spot. Fun fact, when snow is very abundant, they will turn non stop around, tapping their own tracks again and again and they are usualy catched by collar trap in the winter because of it 😉 They appreciate dense area for their safety and their meat is dark purple-ish red and very tasty. 😊 good luck!

  5. Where I live in Montana it’s much easier to find snowshoe hares just before dark or even at night in the headlights. I’m actually hoping to get my male Harris hawk out limping for snowshoes this autumn. Just Incase anyone is wondering snowshoe hares are unmanaged fair game anytime in Montana

  6. It is my understanding that while they don't go underground they can have extensive dens in the snow often making use of tree roots or downed trees to form burrows. When being pursued they almost swim beneath the snow if necessary. When I finally found a snowshoe hare spot to fly my redtailed hawk she spotted them flushing far away from the tree tops far before I ever saw anything flush. There where signs of nothing but snowshoe hare and I knew it had to be a hare but it took a few outings to actually see one. I think they either flush from quite far away or play the camouflage game and wait until the last moment. The are an impressive quarry to pursue!

  7. Ever since i met the first harris/golden hybrid in Ontario and moved out to alberta i've wondered how a male hybrid would do hunting snowshoe in Alberta. Unfortunately life situations relegate me to a bush beater rather than a falconer, but still love your videos

We have a lot of Snow shoes at the airport
