  1. Berners were the result of the Romans bringing their dogs to Swaziland and having them mate with the native dog population, this breed have been around for over 2000 years.

The closest breed related to Bernese Mountain Dogs are the St Bernard, which is a cousin breed (related but distinct enough to be both pure breeds).

The actual typical lifespan for a Bernese Mountain Dog is 9-10 with some being able to live past that (16 is the record), the reason why many Berners live 6-8 years is because there are problems with their genetic breeding line (family histories from one or both sides) this can range from physical disabilities and diseases (like Cancer or a lowered immune system) to mental disabilities (like schizophrenia and uncontrolled paranoia). This is why you must NEVER buy from unregulated and unregistered puppy mills, join a dog club in your country that focuses on Bernese and get in contact with owners who manage legal, registered and regulated Bernese breeding farms (these have government officials who inspect the farm seasonally in order to make sure ends meet and the dogs are in good health).

In Australia, a 6-8 week old Bernese puppy can cost between $4k-5k and you must be in a club and have been recommended by 2 members before getting a puppy bred for you.
