Border Collie. Cute Border Collie. Dogs puzzle for kids and adults.
Some facts.
The Border Collie’s ancestors lived with the Vikings. Like their owners, they loved adventure, and therefore, during the visits of warlike northerners to Scotland, the shaggy companions often went on independent tours of new lands. Farmers living on the border of Scotland and Britain quickly appreciated the intelligence and endurance of Scandinavian dogs and quickly found them a suitable occupation – herding cattle. Fans of the tartan kilt began to call their four-legged helpers “collies” (translated from Gaelic as useful). The British simply called them shepherd dogs, adding “border” (i.e., border) to the name.
Important! It is believed that the border collie breed was born thanks to the union of Viking dogs and dogs of the Roman army.
The furry workers tried their best. They herded sheep into herds with virtually no human intervention, saved stray fulmars from falling from rocky cliffs, and drove away predators with ringing barks. Villagers even organized dog competitions, and the smartest winners were given the role of successors to the family. Such dogs were valued quite highly, but high society did not see any attractive qualities in the shaggy “farmers.” A little later, the British nobility will realize their mistake.
Luck smiled on the Border Collies several times. Their first public appearance (a dog show in 1860) received the approval of experts. Then in 1876, the writer Lloyd Price organized a competition: Scottish shepherd dogs deftly controlled the herd, guided only by gestures and the owner’s whistle. The Americans watched their virtuoso performance. At that time, sheep farming flourished in the States, and smart shepherd dogs came in very handy. At home, the borderers were introduced to Queen Victoria. Struck by the ingenuity and childish enthusiasm of the shaggy people, the royal lady hastened to settle them in Buckingham Palace. Merry Collies became fashionable, but the breed was officially registered only in 1915. The founders of the Border dynasty are considered to be the pets of James Reid and their offspring.
Character and parenting tips
The Border Collie is called not only the smartest dog, but also one of the most difficult. These characteristics must be mutually exclusive. However, the handsome borderer skillfully combines them. So, what should the owners of such a pet prepare for, and how one character trait can be an angelic gift or a punishment from heaven.
The half-Scottish, half-British collie does not have the selfish Napoleonic goal of being No. 1. However, his wet nose will always be at the center of what is happening. He will examine all corners of the house and check where the noise is coming from. Most likely, you will not hear the sounds that interest your pet, but the dog has extremely sensitive hearing. He will take part in all household chores and will not be too lazy to get up at 3 am if the owner suddenly gets the idea to get out of a warm bed and go to the window to admire the moon. However, on a busy day he will not get in the way. He senses a person’s mood at the level of intuition. Border is almost a psychic, because he knows how to predict the owner’s desires before he voices them. Are you tired of switching channels on your TV in search of an interesting program, and the thought flashed through your head that it would be nice to have some fun? Border is already at your feet with a ball in his teeth and mischievous sparkles in his eyes. Feeling overwhelmed after a hard day? The pet will leave you alone, settling down with its favorite toy nearby.
The only thing that a border collie cannot do is remain calm in splendid isolation while everyone in the household is working and studying. The pet becomes especially nervous when it is not walked enough. Energy equal in strength to a hurricane will splash out at home. Broken window sills, torn baseboards, eaten shoes… But the apocalypse can be avoided: walk with your pet at least 2 hours a day (an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening). Run, throw a frisbee (flying disc) and play lawn football. Exhausted to the point of losing his pulse, but a very happy pet at home will be quieter than water, below the grass.
