One of the first decisions you’ll need to make as a new Doberman owner is if you’re going to have your Doberman’s tail docked, also known as “bobbed”. First, you should know why Dobermans have their tails docked, how the tail docking procedure is performed, if docking is legal where you live, at what age it’s done, and how much it usually costs. This is something that should always be performed by a qualified veterinarian with experience in this practice. Tail docking is usually done when the dog is between 1 to 7 days of age, although earlier is better. It’s performed either surgically with a scalpel or scissors, or via a ligature (or a small rubber band) wrapped around the tail to cut off circulation. Tail docking typically costs between $20-$40 for newborn puppies or $500-$900 for an adult Doberman. Make sure you communicate with your breeder before your puppy is born if you want to leave the tail natural as most breeders in the United States will automatically dock the tails of all their litters soon after birth.

  1. I dont really like Most people who have channels about a their favorite dog breed because they dont really do a lot of research, think their dog is the best and just say want they think is right. But i really do think you are amazing. You do your research verry well and are just a really nice dude.

I would love to own a dobermann when i am older, and have more time

  2. Just one additonal comment – the tails of dobermans are very strong and elegant! Showing some shit picture should not convince any owner to hurt the animal! I'm sure, that your dogs are sooo HAPPY, cause you docked them!!!

  3. The standard and AKC reasoning for docking tails is far different then the original reason. Same with the ears being cropped. No dog in the wild has floppy ears. Wolves don’t, foxes don’t, wild African dog don’t, Dingos don’t, etc. Floppy ears on a dog is a mistake due to man’s involvement in the creation process. The original true reason Dobermans have the ears cropped and tails docked is so that as John mentioned about the tail, the animal has no grab points for someone being attacked to grab onto. Can’t grab a “V” shape and hang onto it as in the ears. Surely can’t grab a nubby and hang onto it as in the tail.

  4. I was trying to find one good reason why I should get my doberman docked. I could not find one.

  5. Honestly it's absolutely ridiculous how people breed, maim and just do whatever they wish to dogs is order to make them their accessory item. Ridiculous.

  6. I knew a Chinese granny who had all her puppies tails chopped off.
She told me it was natural till one day I discovered a jar under her kitchen sink full with puppies tails chopped bite sizes in a pickle sauce..

  7. So we decided whats a standart for them to look like and chose to cut tails lmao. Can't wait until we decide those things for humans and start amputating legs from new born babies. They need it for balance, comunication and even if they wouldn't need it at all its a body part and we shouldn't just be taking that away from them. This video made me hate humans honestly

  8. I’m only 12 and have always wanted a Doberman and when I get older I just can’t wait to get one your videos are very help full thanks you so much

  9. I totally disagree about the tail being docked for the pathetic reason that they can break their tails!! I had an american bulldog that has a long (not curled) tail & never had any problems with it!!! Leave your dogs alone! Dogs need tails naturally for balance! Docking is purely for cosmetic reasons!!

  10. … but I thought a dog’s tail told us things, like if he’s excited or scared. Like an antenna to let me know important things. 🤷‍♀️?

  11. They definitely feel it and they aren’t out under anesthesia. I work at a veterinary clinic. Most vets can’t stomach it because it is the worst procedure to perform. Do not dock your puppies tails. They don’t clamp off the tails, they just cut them off and stitch them up. Amputation is necessary if your dog gets injured but it is cruel to do to puppies for no reason. When tails get amputated, they are put under anesthesia and are given pain meds to keep them comfortable. The cries from the puppies having their tails removed makes the whole clinic go silent. It’s literally torture and this man is severely misinformed. Do not listen to what he says, he hasn’t had to hold a two day old puppy while a vet cuts their tails and dew claws off. Stop doing this to the pets you claim to love.

  12. My dog has a STRONG tail. So strong, it hit my other little dogs eye so hard, it almost came out of its eye socket so yeah… If I could dock, I would. Personal preference. Scariest day of my life and a ride to the vet ER

  13. Does the banding method leave a grey bald spot at the end of the tail forever? Or will hair grow back again ? And do they come in sizes? Thank you!!

  14. I had Aussies for 25 years, one with a NBT and the other two already docked when I got them. I currently have an 11-y-o border collie (somehow THEY manage to work with tails intact) and am thinking about another Aussie in the future, but will not agree to bobbing if I get a pup. I found your website online and was encouraged by your knowledge and opinions. Thank you!

  15. the only people that dock a dog tail are people applying their dog to breed standards animal abusers and maybe dogfighters.

  16. We had to dock our black and tan coonhound/ beagle mix because some stupid kids stole him and when he came home they had skinned his tail. besides us our vet was p*ssed. We had an idea of who it was but we couldn't prove it.

  17. I have rotterman … Its rottweiler and doberman cross. He is one and half month old … Can i still able to cut his tail or not ???
