At the request of some of my viewers, I decided to do this video to help other Doberman owners to be aware of exactly what’s involved in the ear cropping procedure. Both for your dog, and the aftercare that will be required on your part. Deciding to get your dog’s ears cropped is a very personal decision and regardless of if you agree with it or not, maybe you can learn something from my experience with the issue.

Please remember that ear cropping may not be legal or widely performed in your country, but this is a big world. In many countries (the United States included) Doberman ear cropping is an incredibly common procedure. In fact, a Doberman Pinscher is outside of the breed standard as set by the Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA), if its ears are not cropped and will be disqualified from many shows. So please keep an open mind since this is such a big world with so many different cultures, and let’s all learn something!

As most Doberman owners know all too well, not every dog product works well for this unique breed. That’s why I maintain a list of the best products I’ve found so far for Dobermans.

  1. I worked for several years at a wonderful veterinary office who did many, many crops for all croppable breeds (schnauzer, boxer, pit, great dane, cane corso, etc.). I would just like to add to the sound information already provided: Look for a veterinarian who does crops with a laser vs a scalpel. Laser surgery cauterizes the wound as it's done, so it lessens pain, bleeding, and chance of infection. They refused to do crops with a scalpel in this particular office and I don't remember them ever using stitches after it was done this way, which was the only point where you mentioned Cooper had some discomfort.

On a general side note: Cropping is falling out of favour with veterinarians and I've noticed it becoming increasingly difficult to find a veterinarian, in my area anyway, who will perform the procedure. I believe I remember one of the veterinarians I worked with saying it was no longer taught at Purdue University (where they earned their DVM) anymore, as they deem it cosmetic (another controversy arising in this new day is the practice of declawing cats).

  2. Thank you for the video. Our Dobermans ears were cropped by the breeder when we picked him up. His ears a looking to stand pretty ease but he's only 11 weeks old. I've been watching your videos for a while and would love to know how you are posting your Dobies ears?

  3. Hey John, just got my Doberman puppy Aerys, he’s 11 weeks and we are really struggling to get his ear posts to stay, seems to be he knocks atleast one if not both off within 6-8 hours, i was wondering if you did them yourself every time or he got them posted at the vet? And if so was glue used in either case?

    Sorry to bother, thanks!

  4. In Spain you will be fineed 5,000 euros for cutting off your dog's ears for cosmetic purposes.

  5. Just got a new pup & find your training videos absolutely amazing. I'm getting your commands within 5-6 uses of them with my baby dobie. Can't cope with the ear/tail business though? I live in Europe (Ireland) and this is all completely illegal? Can't imagine how it is in anyway ethical.

  6. This is a world wide forum with lots of opinions. If you look up Doberman in the dictionary, it'll have cropped ears, docked tail, ect.. AKC standards are met. Go to a real AKC breeder. They may offer a dog with natural ears, but may request a full deposit upfront. Trying to sell a sell a dog that doesn't look like an AKC registered Doberman can be challenging. Unless AKC changes the breed standard, you will continue to see dogs as good representatives of the breed. Look at dog shows, you won't see natural ears. Posting is not terrible and any you tube search can find multiple ways to post. As with any animal, consistency is the key. Vet techs are few and far between on posting due to the previous comments. Learn to do it yourself. It will help bond, and you will have a proper looking dobie. Unbelievable after COVID, crops went up 3-500%. One local vet charged $1400 for a crop! My opinion, get a doberman that looks like one. You won't be disappointed. Natural ears don't change the dog. Males should not be fixed until at least 2 Year's old , if you want a large dobe that has testosterone to help him do his job. (Protecting You!) Just my opinion. I hope AKC keeps the standard the same. Herr Doberman created a very special breed and it needs to be preserved.

  7. ears on a doberman i could take or leave. alot do look good with natural ears as well… one thing i can't stand is the ratty tail though, that is a deal breaker for me.

  8. How do you deal with people's negative comments about ear cropping? We are currently dealing with a lot of hateful comments about the decision we made to have our puppy's ears cropped, and the reasons we have for doing it are justified to us.

  9. I find it absolutely astonishing that anyone can voluntarily mutilate their dog while claiming to be an animal lover… People that do this should be arrested and banned from owning animals at all!

  10. One of several reasons, Ear cropping is done for many breeds is to lower the number of infections. My dobie's tail is docked but her ears were left floppy and unfortunately gets ear infections. She hasn't had one recently but that is because I religiously clean her ears every week.

  11. I love the cropped look but with my work schedule I wouldn't be able to maintain the wraps around the ears. Especially if it was for like 6 months. So to avoid the risk of having his ears looking jacked up I'm going with the natural look. I believe it's best for us both. Wasn't even considering putting him in shows. So 👍 great video

  12. No pain? they say its extremely painful, lets do your then you can say its not painful…….its dog abuse plain and simple and you don't deserve to own a dog and your vet needs to loose his licence

  13. Can you do a posting video? Or point me in the best direction that you use I don’t like the ones my breeder gave me and can’t find a good one

  14. Never. My 3rd one, first 12 years, second lived 14 years, no issues with the normal natural ears. Never ever. (Best : European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals)
