In this video, we’ll explore all the best information about this topic available and come to some solid conclusions that will help you decide when it’s best to get your Doberman neutered.

  1. I'd be very concerned about any vet recommending desexing a medium/large breed at 6 months. My vet asked me to wait until 18months – he also did a prophylactic laparoscopic gastropexy. Skeptvet does a great overview of available studies on advantages / disadvantages of desexing or not including on different sized breeds. Most breeders in Australia recommend 18 months+ ideally

  2. Please provide data for behavior benefits of neutering. The only proven benefit is reduced marking. The reduced aggression is actually a myth. All studies that I am aware of have shown neutering increases aggression, reactivity, and shyness in dogs. If I missed a study that contradicts this please let me know.

  3. Thank you very much for your videos. We made the decision to get a Doberman based on your informative channel.
In regards to neutering, it seems to me that the only reason to do it is for behavioral reasons. But if you care about your dog, you'll wait until it's about two years old. By then, the behaviors would've become habits and neutering won't do much to change them. So neutering at that time will not bring the desired benefits…

  4. Some Good Info John I checked out the video I especially agree on that bone cancer and waiting to that age like you said good video I let chief remain intact I may breed him with my neighbor's female Doberman when she becomes the right age

  5. What if my Doberman’s testicles have not dropped and he’s 8 months?? Should it be sooner than later when they find and remove them?

  6. I'm picking up my doberman puppy in 2 weeks and am trying to decide whether to neuter him. I really want an athletic dog to take on big hikes and adventures. I'd really like him to develop an athletic and muscular physique. I'm assuming neutering him would cause less muscle and bone development due to lack of testosterone, would this be true? Or if I wait 18 – 24 months like you recommend, would he already be pretty well developed by then? Given he receives proper exercise and training of course.

  7. My Doberman is 14 years old never spayed and no health issues. My Doberman before mine right now lived 13 years and never was spayed.

  8. Our Dobermans are 16 months. I have one and my brother has one. They are the nicest dogs. But when I visit my brothers house and the 2 dogs get together they fight very aggressively. Both males and siblings. We're hoping nuetering will help

  9. We got a doberman because of you and your shows. I feel like I know you personally. Thank you for all your helpful videos. Your pros and cons of "when" to neuter your male doberman is great…but what I really want to know is if you personally would and/or do neuter your male doberman and if so, why?

  10. Decreased less than 1% chance of testicular cancer and invites tons of other problems. I personally think a confident aggressive territorial dog is better than a fearful dog as confident dogs are easier to predict and fearful dogs just bite someone without giving any clue. ( With proper socialization no dog will be highly aggressive)

  11. I didn’t neuter my boy until he was 8 and only because he had a health issue. He’s very healthy now and going on 11 years old. He’s still very protective and, plays like a youngster.

  12. I recently got a 8 1/2 week old Doberman when I got him he use to look at me and follow me everywhere, now he doesn’t look at me at all or follow me everywhere. And he won’t listen to any of the commands I had thought him before, did I do something wrong? What should I do to have him be more focused on me when giving commands and how to have him follow me

  13. This is a great resource! I’m considering neutering my goof soon because the neighborhood has a lot of intact females and he’s learning he can fly over a gate if he really wants to. I’m trying to stick it out a few more months to 18 and keep everybody safe but boy is he adamant.

  14. My doberman Bruce Lee is 7 months & his appointment to be neutered is this morning. After watching this & reading everyone's comments, I'm canceling his appointment until he is older.

  15. Our Doberman is 1,3 years old and our gut instinct tells us we should not interfere with her body. There is always a risk, spayed or not. I think fertility hormones are part of bodies for a reason. When we took her, we also decided to raise her on raw food. She eats several types of meat, poultry, vegetables, herbs, cottage cheese.

  16. My Doberman turned 2 this year. I worry’s everyday of one day I’ll lose him. I’m doing research almost everyday to see how I can make him live longer. 🥲

  17. My boy is 18 months. My question is neutering method … vasectomy versus castration? Seems most vets consider castration as inhumane? I have absolutely no issues with my Doberman as it relates to aggression or non neutered dog issues right now. Should I wait until 24 months?

  18. We never neutered our dog, other than DCM which got him at the young age of 4, he was super healthy, zero behavior issues. Anyone reading this who has a doberman, please check your dog for DCM.

  19. dogs can get diabetes but that has to do with diet. if dogs are neuter/spay they have health problems they won't be able to have puppies which is the whole point of the practice, and they can die.
