The Old English Sheepdog is a large breed of dog that emerged in England from early types of herding dog. The OES, as fans call the breed for short, was historically a drover, helping farmers drive cattle and sheep to the market. Today, this good-natured dog enjoys the comfort of home life and still competes in conformation, obedience, agility, and herding trials.

In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Old English Sheepdog that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: 60 to 100 pounds
Height: From 21 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10-12 years
The Old English Sheepdog is a playful, affectionate clown who delights in frolicking with his family and neighborhood children. In fact, adolescence in the OES often extends to about age three, and an adult OES will retain his playful demeanor well into his golden years. An intelligent breed, the OES is a quick learner, always looking for something interesting and fun to do. He’s capable of performing numerous tasks, including herding, agility, obedience, and search and rescue. This breed requires significant physical and mental exercise. He doesn’t enjoy being left alone for long periods of time and much prefers — in fact, needs — to be in the company of his family.
A properly bred OES is good-natured and kind, and this is what makes him an excellent children’s companion and a super family dog. He’s sometimes called a nanny, a term of endearment that arises from stories surrounding the role he sometimes takes on within his family. However, the OES is not known for being an assertive watchdog. He may bark when strangers come to his home — or he may not. Some OESs are highly protective, while others aren’t.

My girl is ten years old❤
Best dogs ever! Have one currently – four in total – they are goofy, sweet and the most amazing companions. They all make me laugh from morning to night.
My favorite dog.
I don't have an OES but fell in love with the breed as a young girl. In English class in grade 3 the reader was the "Mr. Mugg" series that featured a mischievous OES. If I get such a dog, I will call him "Mr. Mugg"!
"da ya laik dags?"
I do have to say, I did learn something important here.
Drover.
To me, drover was the first border collie I met. A cattle dog out of eastern Oregon. Fast as anything. Smart as a whip. And when he would sneak off to my dad's place, a lovable layabout who just wanted to be close to people.
I had no idea his name was a trade, and it makes perfect sense. Lad was a 4 time champ in local herding competitions. And when I found out he had been put to stud, his puppies pricetag was a shocker.
Working dogs are damn useful.
He lived to 13. And had a hell of a life herding cattle all over eastern and central Oregon. And snuck many a strip of bacon and a belly scratch while not on duty.
Salute to all herd dogs. You put the miles on and the hours in. And you're worth every illicit scritches.
Are they barkers ?
Idk man. Looks like every regular dog but fluffier
The docking tail is acceptable in the USA. It is not cruel just as removing dew claws. AKC requires this in the show. Please correct this in the video. to correct separation anxiety the dog must have excercise before leaving your dog at home in crates.
An old English sheepdog was the first dog I ever owned. That dog was intense when it came to protecting the family. Saved me when I was a kid from a neighbourhood bully who came onto my front yard to beat me up lol it could have broke it’s neck because it was on a leash attached to a pole and when he chased him, he got yanked back. One time, a German Shepard just looked at me wrong and it was on its neck in seconds. I felt bad for the other dog.
Ahahaha watching that frenchie absolutely eat it at https://youtu.be/2p_-R8_Cvcg?t=320 made my day 😂😂
Good description of the breed. Best dog I have ever had but lots of attention needed…grooming, exercising and loving…all a daily requirement.
I love my fred.. 2.5 year old oesd.. he's a full-time job but I love him so much
The video says not that tail docking is illegal and not to do it but most of the dogs in the video have no tail. Are there varieties born like this or did those dogs have the tail docked? (I love their cute butts with no tail. They look like baby bears 🐻 🐶 )
I have had the good fortune to have been "owned" by 5 (two or three at a time) over many years and have loved then all. Two OES were raised as pups while 3 were rescued. Each had totally different personifies but shared the traits described in this video. They "crossed the rainbow bridge" btwn the ages of 8 to 15 years old, so having one is a serious commitment.
Aslo funfact there scared of small dogs barks lol
the narrator is wrong, when he said docking is illegal, when the breed standard in the USA still docks tails and it is still okay to do so, as the puppy cannot feel the snipping, as their spinal cord has not developed strong nerves and by the 3rd day a puppy can still be docked. Lots of breeders still recommend docking the tails as many of the breeds have been known to break their tails several times because of the force used when they wag the tails and then hits it against a wall or furniture.
We love our 85 pound 16 month old male. He was too much for the first owner. He is such a good dog.
Number 11, as a puppy they bite a lot as a playful game, but it hurts and i think about the little kids
as a puppy they nibble a lot and it hurts but i realize just now from God they nibble bite because they want to play, thank you God for teaching me that tonight
Just yesterday i had to break up a fight between an old english sheepdog and a Pitbull, believe me when i say that i saved that pitbull's life.
My families dog need non stop cuddling! I've never seen another dog that was so in need of being cuddled and petted – he starts barking and complaining when you stop. Even if you've been petting him for two hour on end 😊
So weird to see them with tails
These dogs can be very aggressive, just to be aware
Is docked tail illegal in the UK? Stateside there’s no law against this.
Thank you
Love your show.
This bread can be contagious with urban / city houses.
