However, If you are a pet owner that gets attached, you will want your pet rabbit to be around for as long as possible. So it is important to know how long rabbits generally live and which breeds have a history of longevity. Most pet owners and their children get really attached to their pets. We all know that the loss of a pet can be really stressful for a family, so it makes sense to put some effort into choosing a rabbit that has a fairly good chance of being around for a decade or more. As you set out to buy a bunny, it is good to be knowledgeable about the different breeds, so you can make a wise choice.

Of course, you will want to know how long your rabbit will be with you. Pets become a part of our family. Fortunately, the average lifespan of a pet rabbit is about 8 to 12 years.

How many different types of rabbits are there?

If you are going to purchase a rabbit for the first time, it may be prudent to educate yourself on the different breeds of rabbits that are available. You may not know but there are about 60 rabbit breeds! You don’t have to learn off the list provided below by heart. This is just general information for the enthusiastic rabbit owner. It is also important to note that not all of the rabbit breeds listed are predominantly “pet” breeds. Of course, what is available to you will depend on where you are in the world.

Which breeds of rabbits live the longest?

As a committed pet owner, you will always be interested in the breeds that have a greater chance of living longer. Especially, if you have children in the home who may become very attached to their new pet. Here is a list of the pet rabbits that are usually around for a long time.

American Rabbit – Even though it is considered a rare breed, it can live up to 12 years.

Himalayan Rabbit– These rabbits are relatively small in size, have a wonderful temperament and live up to 8 years.

Lionhead Rabbit– This unusual pet rabbit has an average life span of 7 to 9 years. They are wonderful with children.

American Fuzzy Lop – As a domesticated pet rabbit, the American Fuzzy Lop can live up to 10 years.

American Sable – This rabbit can also live for 10 years. They make good pets but are generally reared for commercial use.

Dwarf Lop – This little rabbit is also known as the Mini Lop. These pet rabbits are very hardy and can be easily identified by their long ears. They can live up to 12 years if they are kept as pets and properly cared for.

Netherland dwarf – These bunnies are particularly tiny, they often weigh a mere pound. They generally live between 10 to 12 years.

Jersey Wooly – This rabbit was first bred in the United States. They usually weigh up to 3 pounds. Their life expectancy is generally 6 to 9 years. They are generally very docile.

Mini Rex – These bunnies come it at 3.5 pounds to 4.5 pounds. They are extremely playful and make great pets. The Mini Rex usually has a lifespan of 8 to 10 years.
