When people hear about bull-type terrier breeds, they may perceive them as aggressive, uncontrollable, and fighting dogs. One of them is the American Staffordshire Terrier or AmStaff for short. A dog with an undeserved reputation, AmStaffs are loving companions that make excellent protectors if trained well.

These are the most lovable dogs. We had one and a weenie dog. Both males and the weenie dog was the. It alpha but they were inseprable.
I have an AmStaff mix. I had a gene test done and the mix is German Shorthair Pointer. He strikes the classic pointer pose when we go walking and he hears something unexpected, lol.
He is a bundle of kisses and gets along with our smaller pug-poodle mix.
We are trying to socialize him with other dogs since he reacts to new dogs by barking, but humans he is superb with.
My Blue helped raise 2 girls and was their guard plus stuffed animal! They totally gave these dogs a bad name, Skye was a baby sitter and once even saved my Uncle when he had a seizure early in the morning by waking up the whole house running back and forth barking until I got up and saw my uncle on the floor by the front door. My favorite dog breed for sure!
Some health issues include mauling and killing humans especially when in a pack. These are dangerous animals and owners should be required to hold registration and insurance
Hands down the BEST dogs ever. That said, not everyone SHOULD own one. Instead of BSL (breed specific legislation) against any breed, maybe require testing and licensing to own some of the more strong or aggressive types. I include strong because very physically strong dogs require owners with strong leader personalities–simply put , pitbulls/terrier breeds, require a strong leader or THEY will become the pack leader and that's when you get dogs that are more dangerous. They live by dog rules–if it's dangerous, bite it. So owners could be tested and licensed to make sure they are a good fit for all breeds, pay a $20 fee for however long, and then go find their best buddy. If you can handle a pitbull, then you can handle most dogs. Anyone wishing to purchase one of those "dangerous breeds" can flash their card and all will be well.
We currently have 2. One is currently in training to be a service dog. He chose her because he wanted a pitbull specifically and he saw her and fell in love. Why would he want a pitbull you ask? Because pound for pound, they are the strongest dog breed that ever existed for their weight class. Most can easily drag 10 times their body weight…..as in a dead drag being pulled along. He's diabetic. If he's at a store and goes down for some reason and she can't get anyone to follow her, then she (70 pounds) can easily drag an under 200 pound man TO help. He'd never owned a bully breed–but I have and he trusted my guidance help. She's an amazing dog, her name is Athena…..but we call her Athena Ocean Houndini. Houndini for being an escape artist from hell….and Ocean for her intelligence:
Him: If Lily and Athena were criminals, this is who they'd be: Lily would be the Keystone Cops trying to investigate a crime but failing miserably and Athena's gang would be like Ocean's Eleven, too smart and sophisticated to get caught.
Me: Yeah but they all got caught!
Him: So does she, but she's a klepto and we know she is, and we know where she stashes her loot….and that's where she'd take her loot as a criminall
I don't think he's wrong HAHAHAHAHA
One other health issues which is also common with American Staffordshire Terrier is the tear of the Canine Cruciate Ligament…. and my rescued Amstaff who is now 5 years old has indeed experienced skin issues and UTI’s ….and she already has spondylosis….got her first TPLO surgery two weeks ago….Nonetheless, she is the most affectionate dog I have ever had and she is very sweet even in her stubbornness….great breed overall !!!
So many of these aren't even AmStaffs. And it's pronounced Stafford-SHIRR.
My Molly is half staff and German shepherd. And she is so smart. At 62 she keeps me going lol. She keeps us laughing all the time! I'm so happy we have her.
Popsicle: Nobody knows what Popsicle's breeding was so we cant say that he was an Amstaff. What we know about him is that he was of pit bull type.
Stubby: Stubby lived during WW1 and so he was not American Staffordshire Terrier, as you yourself even noted AKC did not officially recognize this breed until 1936.
My Amstaff/ Catahoula is the man.
I have a amstaff work performed with all the dog. Don’t need chew toy so much and im a first time dog owner. The only thing you need with them is time love and consistency. Assertive method will not work at all
I wouldn't change my service dog for the world! She was tied to a motorhome the first 3 years of her life. Now she's my service dog. She was never trained. She is an Amstaff. I'd love to share a picture.
My choice of dog
I had staffies all my life except for one English bullterrer
i love pit bools 🐶
Every toddler daycare and retirement home needs one as a comfort dog.
My pup is half staff she is so amazing and smart
Look exactly like my putbills
The first black dog is not an Amstaff but a Cane Corso
You pronounce 'staffordshire' the wrong way
