Terriers might be small… but don’t let the size fool you.

  1. I love my Jack! She is our second, the first was a gift from God, this one is a gift from Satan! The only thing she does that drives me nuts is the barking! Citronella collar works like a charm when she needs to be quiet. They are the best breed but I agree with everything you said about them.

  2. In NYC people have multiple small breeds like Pugs or Scotties, or sometimes a Westie and a Scotty for a Salt n Pepa combo!

In the city we left the dog run when Jack Russell Terrorists appeared! They would hang off placid Labs and Giant breeds’ necks! If the JRT’s went for each other we expected a fight to the death but it never happened!

  3. I’m going to TRY to make a long story short…but I had this amazing dude for 20 years, so it might be a little longer, then short.

I had just bought my first house and my husband’s grandfather had given a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier mix to his granddaughter who was just a toddler…and I guess this puppy was rambunctious and made his granddaughter nervous…we got this puppy after her family decided against having this ball of energy.

What a blessing this guy was! Yes, the first couple of years included shoe chewing…just ONE of the shoes of the pair, and then onto the next ONE shoe of another pair. lol

A couple of years later, children of our own were introduced into his world.

I’ll just say that he was the very best dog, that I had the privilege of having in my life….many wonderful stories of him. He actually never left our acre and a half yard, except twice, and that was when he was still young once, and once in his elder years, following a neighbor through our yard.

Skipper was the best dogger dog! He was mostly white, with tan patches, and he would follow me while I mowed our big yard, about 10-15 feet behind me, tinting his white legs green….we (the kids and I) would call him Mr. Green jeans for a day or so after.

I really miss that lovely little guy, but I appreciate your video to remind me of how great these guys and gals are.

Thank you for your channel! ❤️🐶

  4. I remember one day, i had a couple of Cane Corso, and we had a Yorkshire Terrier male, and the Cane Corso male wasn't neutered and the York neither, and they coudn't stand each other.
We tried to keep them seperated at all times, but one day we failed to do so, and a fight broke out, i had the Corso in a headlock and my wife tried to get the York of the upper hind leg, he bit so hard that we needed a water hose to get him of🤣.
The relationship between the two of them didn't improve after that, and it was a reminder of the true terrier nature, they just don't care how small they realy are.

  5. When I was a kid I begged for a Jack Russell terrier. My family went to the shelter and got a scruffy Maltese mix that was a bit of a spoiled brat. I now love my high maintenance breeds but I’m glad we didn’t jump straight into a Jack Russell. I don’t think the dog I grew up with heard the word no ever and a Jack Russell would have been a nightmare spoiled like that😅

  6. I've only been bitten twice in my life by a dog. Both were JRTs . Attitude off the scale, huge personality, takes no prisoners, can dig it's way to China, stubborn. Great in the right hands but mind your fingers if you get in the way

  7. I'm surprised the Rat Terrier didn’t make your list. My first dog as an adult was a rat terrier. I had no idea what i was getting into! He ended up being an awesome dog. He did run the show for the most part, but we really learned to love the breed. He had quite the personality and was such a goofball. I miss my little crazy guy.

  8. As someone from the horse world, Jack/Parson Russell/ Rat Terriers are pretty interchangeable…but PLEASE, if you have these dogs loose and/or unsupervised, get them snipped!! Not only are they impressive hunters/ rabble-rousers, they are impressive breeders! 🤣🤣🫠🫠

  9. GREAT LIST!!! My parents got a Westie when I was 3 and he was AWESOME!!! My neighbors got a Westie 2 years ago and I love him, and he was OBSESSED with my female pointer (rip) and I took care of him for 10 days while they were out of town and he is a TYRANT!!! LOLOL Thanks, Coach for this video as all these guys are are SO CUTE as puppies and people need to know they can be a handful and they need to get on top of training and socialization ASAP ❤❤❤❤❤

  10. I think you need a top 10 for terriers! 🤣 I would definitely include the Rat Terrier and the Patterdale. The Patterdale is almost a pint-sized Pit Bull. 😁

  11. I recently acquired a rat terrier from a neglectful/abusive situation. I have never had a small dog or a young dog, preferring to rescue dogs 4-5 yrs old or older. Well, little April is a bundle of energy for sure! Training has required a lot of patience but she is very smart and picks up on things pretty quickly. She’s a love bug but my yard will never be the same

  12. My Mom's dream dog was always a Yorkie. The dog would have been a purse dog for her and that's how I usually see them, with cute little bows in their hair. As you said, small dogs have a purpose too!

  13. Terriers are my favorite dog group. I’m happy to see this video. If I could have a dog, I’d get an Airedale or a Welch Terrier. But I love four of the five breeds on your list (Yorkies are too small for me).

  14. The groomer that was in my father's clinic disliked the Scottie. They seemed to have the propensity to be biters. Not just a nip, but full on grab & bite down, causing serious injury. With no actual warning ( body language). She quit doing them for that reason.

  15. I get so many comments about how fearless my yorkie is when out and about. He'll happily go in the middle of a pack of big dogs, no hesitation. He also loves 'sparring' with other terriers. It's never gotten aggressive before, but it's like a little dominance battle between the two, despite him being much tinier. He may have a coat on and hair up, but he proves himself as a proper dog, no handbags and prams for this guy 😂, he'd be offended

  16. I’ve owned a lot of different dog breeds but my Scottish Terrier is my favorite. She THINKS she’s the largest dog around. Cuddles are infrequent but great, when she decides to bestow them on you. Always by my side, unless there is something to be scared off. People say they are difficult to train – obviously they’ve never attempted to train a Bassett Hound. I want another one SO bad!!!

  17. My Westie cornered a possum under our deck at 2 am and would not stop barking or give up the chase. We tried everything to get her back inside. Finally, we had to spray her with the hose, and even that took a while. I love them, though. They have such fun personalities! She’s our second Westie.

  18. I adore terrier breeds i had a border terrier for 13 years she was a great dog very loving but very territorial she didn’t like strangers coming in to her home .. i now have a 2 year old morkie she is so loving to every one and every thing she is very different compared to my border terrier

  19. My daughter’s latest Westie, Ellie, ticks every box you mentioned. As my daughter says: “I work to pay for the house, but she actually owns it.” 😅

  20. I was chatting with an Episcopal priest about dogs. He said that growing up, his parents always had JRTs. I asked if he liked the breed and and he said he considered them 'spawns of Satan'. I have always kept that in mind.

  21. Most irritating 🙄 dogs! Hate Jack Russell dogs with a passion! Most dogs are just a nuisance to all other inhabitants of this planet!

  22. Patterdales, mine is basically a wild animal living in my house. Not a loving dog unless you have food in your hand. Once a month he challenges me and I have to constantly remind the little “MF” that I’m the boss! Dog and animal aggressive. I have a few tales about this dog, I’ve fed him raw since I acquired him at 11 weeks he’s 10 years now and he looks like he’ll live another 15 years, he sill looks like a puppy! If he were 20 lbs heavier there would be no dealing with him.

  23. I have a Westie, and he is a very loyal and loving dog. BUT….. he ticks all the Westie boxes, and definitely displays 'westitude'. The trick I find is to make him think whatever you want him to do is more fun than what he is currently doing. There has to be some excitement, or sometimes a bribe – i.e food. He also likes having a job, either hide some of his dinner in the garden and get him to find it, or if it is wet outside then 'biscuits in toys' works too. Hide kibble in all the arms and lets of a partly destroyed toy. Giving him a whole egg also works too. Ultimately, he does have me well trained though, not the other way around.

  24. I had a Yorkshire terier many years ago – not one of the tiny ones but an old fashioned working type, solid and by today's standards, quite big. He was great with people and with most other dogs but would go into a barking and snarling rage at German Shepherds and a neighbour's Doberman. He reminded me of the little drunk who tries to pick a fight with the biggest guy in the bar.

  25. Border Terriers are a bit calmer than these five and are game but not too hyper. Hunted loose with larger hounds so a thinking breed.

  26. My tiny 11 lb. Westie that I rescued from a puppy mill, tree'd a raccoon that was twice her size for over an hour. Finally, the raccoon decided he could take her, but nope, Ruthie snarled and chased after him until he escaped.

One time I was speeding and got stopped by a cop. I rolled the window down, he stuck his head in, and Ruthie rushed him, snarling and slathering, and went straight for his jugular. The cop was highly impressed. He said "That's some little dog you got there! I'm going to let you off with a warning. No way am I going to stick my hand in there to give you a ticket!"

Another time a guy tried to steal my purse. Ruthie grabbed him by the ankle, and the guy was crying and begging me to call her off. Finally, she let go, and he ran for his life!

But otherwise she was the sweetest, happiest, and most friendly dog you ever met. I'll never get over her loss. Westies are the best.
