Hey, fellow dog fanciers and whippeteers! My name is Addie, proudly owned by 6 gorgeous whippets currently (10 throughout the years), and I have been surrounded by pets since day 1. The world of show dogs, dog shows and responsible breeding has been keeping me busy since the age of 12 and this channel is especially created to educate on these controversial topics.

I agree with everything you said, but on a positive note, my 10 year old female is very empathetic. My other younger female has the occasional seizure, when this is about to occur, the older one rushes to her and stays there until the seizure is finished. She also loves meeting strangers and children and I've only heard her bark twice.
I have had 3 whippets and waiting for my 4th. I would never let them off leash NEVER. I also kept their crates covered and available for them because that always ends up being their favorite spot.
I think Whippets deeply need off lead exercise- they build muscle free running, we have walked 5 miles today to a favourite ''Hunting'' place.
Recall is very important, and I wouldn't take chances near roads. Having said this, a local person's Whippet X Bedlington puppy had a nasty 'Spiral fracture' from leaping for a ball on a 'safe' field. {£7,000 to date} so insurance is crucial.
Re 'slamming'- I have been knocked off my feet by various Whippets who hit me at knee level – Always when running together. Young Whippets are bad for this, as they haven't good brakes or steering yet. {Edit..I would rather they run into me than something hard} The garden/yard fencing is crucial as well, it costs ££££s to fence even a smallish garden properly, to at least 2 metres height, but worth it. Keeps them in, and other dogs out.
❤I wish you and your pack a great weekend🤗🍖🍗
When you let a whippet off the leash you are releasing a bullet! You need to be aware of your surroundings, are there obstacles, are there other dogs, small furries or any other distractions?.
Even when you call your off lead whippet back to you, you have to consider what is behind you for at least 100m because they will run past you at lightening speed and take ages to slow down.
I was many times impressed by the recall only for my dog to run into an obstacle 50m behind me lol. Letting your whippet of lead is exhilarating! I have seen my dog do amazing feats of athleticism. Watching your whippet run free will fill your heart with joy! And I have had so many people say to me just how much they loved seeing him run. A whippet is not like owning any other dog, they have specific needs but they are great dogs.
Thank you Addie, you are SO right all the way. What coats and jumpers are concerned: My first requirement for the resident doodle was a BackOnTrack coat to keep her warm during the coldest part of winter. She loves it! Have a greyt weekend, all of you!
Love you, Addie .. and your tribe! I have recently got my first pure whippet (rehomed her from a farm) and have had a whippet x bull arab for a few months. And I'm just SO in love with them! We live on property in the Hunter Valley, Australia, so their fully fenced yard is about 1.5 acres with lawns and gardens – perfect for zoomies and I just love watching them. I thought Pixie, the 15mo whippet x was fast, but Lola, the 2.5yo whippet leaves her for dust – boy, she can really move! And when they're not being speedsters or ratbags, they're so sweet and cuddly and loving.
a kite (200m away)
a family of 6 with a dog(150m away)
our new puppy (20m away)
those were the things that messed up our recall that we trained
gotta keep practicing and only letting them off leash in safe areas
Yes, Yes, and Yes to Everything! Thank you Addie for all your thoughtful insights and wonderful video! Loved seeing the one and only Dear Brady in the video clip. Aeris and her compliance with her eye treatment–other worldly! One of my 2.5y old Whippet girls' was nicknamed 'Lil Miss FOMO as a pup and she continues to live up to that name. She keeps me challenged daily and I wouldn't have it any other way!
It's crazy how much grief I've taken for putting clothes on mine. Even coming from women with dogs. It's all very functional clothes, not goofy outfits or anything. But people seem to think all dogs are completely impervious to weather.
I adopted my whippet from her breeder (Silly me she picked us, when we were about the leave she stood by the door looking at us like are we going or what?.)
Her earlier family already had a dog who did not go well with the whippet energy and the family tried to, despite contract sell her at a dog show but thankfully they stumbled upon the breeder and the breeder took her in and placed her with us.
I used to be a kindergarten teacher for dogs and have a lot of experience with all kinds of dogs.
Careful ones, gentle souls and the more cocky ones.
And somehow I ended up with a whippet out of chance, which was honestly the best that ever happened to us.
She used to follow me to work so she got A LOT of socialization both with other dogs and humans.
And early on I used to go out jogging in the woods with her on leash and every time we slowed down I would repeat "Slow" and the "stop" for a complete halt.
To this day She will listen to me when I call "slow"(whilst running crazy in the safe deep wood trails off leash, not a car around) and I shaved off at least 100 m by reminding her beforehand that brakes are a thing. A gentle reminder that she should slow down, turn at me and run ahead instead.
I thought this might help somebody, but I know all whippets are different and all might not be able to resist the running.
For the record she is only off leash at trails both she and I know very well so she knows all the terrain and tends to keep safe.
Anyhow, one of the dogs we had at kindergarten was actually my dogs uncle and he is the reason we thought.. why not a whippet?
I had met him both at work and had him overnight sometimes and we loved his silly goofiness along with the clever and sweet personality.
Party while out and couch potato at home felt like our type of dog.
And down into our laps fell the best thing that ever happened to us.
If she doesn't want to cuddle she'll decline and I love that because it feels very mutual that it is alright in our relationship to say no sometimes.
She loves following along to meet people and do adventurous things, but she loves just as much to just lie in bed and cuddle all day.
As long as we all are together she is fine with either.
She can see whenever I feel bad and is right there for me and the same goes for her.
Is she feeling down, then I am already fetching her a heated blanket.
Once a field rabbit ran out right in front of her off leash and I thought "oh no."
And she ended up doing the most whippet thing she went off after it but it turned on its heels and went into the bushes so my whippet stopped and I saw her go "ew, nope those leaves are wet and yucky, not worth it." 😅
She is loved (spoiled) because that is what she deservers as she loves us just as much right back.
I can definitely relate to a lot of your content and love all the whippet facts and little funny tidbits.
She hunts flies and lies on the floor in protest just like some of the whippets that own you. 😂
Have a nice day full of whippet smooches and hugs!
Thank you Addie! I agree with everything and wish I didn’t need to!😉🤣❤
Hay Adi can u pls share with us someting abput the right food for ur whippets?
Thanks for the videos! Spot on! Regarding temperature regulation, they also are not great at regulating in high temperatures and are more prone to heat exhaustion. So owners need to be mindful, especially when you add running after squirrels to the mix.
My whippet let the management of my apartment just walk off with my washer and dryer. She woke up for a moment and went back to sleep. I tell people whippets are awful guard dogs. they need their beauty sleep. She however is very protective of me. She doesn't let anyone come in my space without making them very aware that she is watching.
