  1. Awww Bernese are adorable! Met a few recently and they are just so chill. Agreed on the quality…puppy mills and backyard breeders need to go. Being careful and responsible is so important.

  2. I have heard such amazing things about king cavaliers!!! And so cute too! Absolutely true on movies etc making breeds popular and overbreed, and uneducated people dumping them. Thanks for educating the masses!!

  3. Great breeds, each of them. The only breed that I've not met is the Bernese, but it has been a breed of interest to us for a great family dog. The only thing is all that hair. 😳🤭 I did not know that the golden retrievers were being over-bred. I guess they can try to turn anything into a cash cow, whether ethical or not. 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ Would you do a list of great large breed protector family dogs? And medium-sized protector dogs? We want to make a discerning choice that combines the breeds' personality with our family while possessing that natural inclination to guard.

  4. Cavaliers have WONDERFUL temperaments. Fabulous little dogs. I just wish heart issues weren't so problematic in the breed.

  5. I knew someone who owned the CKC and she raved about him. I am trying to make a decision as to what breed to get after my great danes pass. I'm getting older and can no longer handle two at a time (although I've own the breed for 40+ years). I know I will always have one – but I would like a second breed that fell into the category that you mention. Since my friend told me about them I've always wanted the CKC – but I am not fond of dogs that small. I've seen what you are talking about with the golden retriever – they used to be the perfect dog when they were the 'red' variety. Once they started coming out with the gorgeous light golden color they began changing their temperament too.

  6. 🐶 Which dog breed do YOU trust most around kids or grandkids? Drop it in the comments – I read every one.

Let’s make sure your next dog is the right fit for your family. ❤

  7. Two of the breeds you have listed, the Berner and the Cavalier, are near the top of lists of the breeds of dog that have the most genetic health issues. The breeding of Cavaliers (and Bulldogs) has even been banned in Norway because breeding them is considered a violation of their Animal Welfare Act. Berners, in addition to a variety of health issues, have among the highest incidence of cancer of any breed.

People searching for a good breed for their family need to do extensive research into ALL aspects of the breeds they’re considering. While the breeds on this list do have excellent temperaments, their overall health and longevity should be a major factor in the choice of these (or any breed) of dog.
