Afghan Hound is my favorite, only because I rescued one. He was about 4yrs old when I adopted him. He didn't run much but he was so smart, and loved to counter surf. I learned not to leave any food on the counter lol. When he was around 7 he started having trouble laying down. He would Howell! Took him to the vet. After x-rays were taken they showed that before he was picked by animal control, he had been hit by a vehicle and his hip was shattered. We will never know happened but when he was found he was so covered in burrs and field grass, they had to shave him. He never made a whimper. The vet thinks he ran into a field and stayed there until he had 'recovered'. Only when arthritis developed did he start to hurt. We had special memory foam beds in every room in the house, except our bedroom because we would lift him on the bed to sleep with us. At age 14 we lost him to stomache torsion. He had eaten his dinner, gone out to potty, came back in and layed on his bed near the dining room while I washed dishes. When I was done I went living room to watch tv. He stayed in his bed, which was kind of unusual because he like to come over and lay on the couch with me. I waited for him so I could help him up but he didn't come. I went over to him and he began lifting his curled tail in a wag, but didn't lift his head. His breathing was a bit labored. I summoned my husband from the garage. Between the two of us we couldn't get him to stand. We rolled him on a sheet and into the back of our covered pickup truck. I road in th back with him, while alerting the Urgent Vet Facility nearby. They were at the door with a gurneys and rushed him in for x-rays. I couldn't forget him wagging his tail as I talked to him on the way way there. A half an hour later were called back to talk to the vet. His stomache a completely twisted in that large chest of his. No running or playing beforehand. Because of his age and problems with his lungs due to the accident years prior he was not expected to make it. My heart was breaking. We chose to take away all of his pains that night and let him run across the rainbow bridge. They brought him in to say our goodbyes and about 15 minutes later came in and began wheeling him out. I asked what they were doing and they replied they would give him an injection to keep him cam and then the final injection to put him to sleep. They would dispose of his body unless we had other plans.
I said "Oh, yes we have other plans. First, he was staying in the room and they could make their injections in the room, so that we would be their for him in his final moments. Then we would be taking him home with us for burial. They were a little surprised, but agreed with us. We brought his body home and because it was getting cold at night I told my husband it could wait till th next day He said he wanted to take care of him now. He got the shovel and went straight out to my hostage garden under the old maple tree. It took about 90minutes to dig his grave. I brought out his favorite bed to lay him on. Through my tears I said "goodbye" to my beautiful blonde "Mr Bojangles" "Bo" and the following spring I planted a bleeding heart plant on top of his grave where it thrived. I am sorry for such a lengthy response, but I always warn friends and family when adopting any deepc"c"B bbr😮
Sorry my dachshund kicked my hand. My final words were when adopting any deep chested dog, always have your vet check out the stomache position. They do a simple operation to anchor the stomache in place to avoid this horrible thing from happening. These are all beautiful breeds, and not only fast runners, but the Afghan hound is a clown, ornery and a cuddle bug. I don't know about the other breeds, but I'm sure they are just as sweet.
