History of the Neapolitan Mastiff You’ve Never Heard ⚔️😱 #shortsfeed #history #dog
The Neapolitan Mastiff has roots going all the way back to 300 B.C., descended from ancient Molossian war dogs used by the Greeks and later adopted by the Romans.
These powerful dogs were bred for warfare, guarding, and protection—used by Roman legions as both battlefield dogs and estate guardians.
Their loose, heavy skin wasn’t just for looks—it helped protect vital organs during fights.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the breed nearly disappeared, but it survived quietly in southern Italy, especially around Naples—hence the name.
In 1946, an Italian journalist named Piero Scanziani helped standardize the breed and bring it back into the spotlight.
